When Not to Use Virtual Try-On

Virtual try-on is a styling preview. It is the wrong tool for several common questions, and using it there wastes time and produces false confidence.

Skip try-on when the question is fit

Do not use a generated image to answer:

• Will this size fit?
• Where will the waistband sit on me?
• Is the hem too long?
• Can I skip putting the clothes on?

Those are body and garment questions. A preview can look plausible and still be wrong about length, drape, and ease. Put the clothes on, or do not claim to know.

Skip try-on when you have not chosen clothes yet

Try-on compares two directions. It does not rummage the closet for you.

If you do not have an anchor piece and two alternatives, start with creating outfits from clothes you already own, Dress me versus the Home stylist, or the nothing-to-wear method. Generating previews of undefined outfits is how people collect pictures instead of getting dressed.

Skip try-on when the photos are a bad reference

A cropped, dark, or wrinkled garment photo will be “tried on” as that mess. A random picture of a similar jacket from the internet is not your jacket.

Photograph the piece so the whole garment is visible before you judge a preview. The person photo should be a clear, full-body image you control. If you would not use those photos to remember the clothes, do not use them to decide.

Skip try-on when you are shopping from a screenshot

A product page try-on and a wardrobe try-on look similar. They are not the same job. Previewing a screenshot you might buy does not tell you whether your navy trousers and that jacket will work, and it still will not guarantee size.

If the clothes are not in your closet yet, a preview is entertainment. It is not a fitting room and not a reason to skip the return policy.

Skip try-on when you already know the winner

If one option is more comfortable, already trusted, or required by the day, wear it. A generated image will not make the uncomfortable option suddenly fine.

The same applies after two previews look alike. The difference may not matter. Stop generating.

When try-on is the right next step

Use it after you have:

1. A wearable anchor you own.
2. Two plausible alternatives for one decision (layer, shoes, formality of the top).
3. Photos of those actual pieces and a usable person photo.

Then generate A and B, choose, and put the winner on your body. That is the whole loop.

No. Even a good preview is not a fitting. Comfort, length, and fabric still need the real clothes.

Why does the preview look good and then feel wrong?

The image can invent drape and hide ease. Your body and the actual garment do not.

Should I keep generating until it looks perfect?

No. Two directions, then a decision. More images usually mean you have not chosen an anchor.

What should I use instead when I am stuck?

Name the day's constraints, pick an anchor, and either change one piece or ask the Home stylist. Save a Look when you have a combination you will wear.
